Language Acquisition and Cultural Awareness & Appreciation forms the overarching approach for Chinese Language Learning Mee Toh School. Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, Oral Interaction and Written Interaction skills are integrated into daily language acquisition in the classroom, whilst Cultural Awareness and Appreciation programmes are carried out through the year to immerse students in the Chinese Culture.
Love For Reading
Instilling the love of reading is an integral part of Chinese Language Learning. These 2 parts programme (READ@MTL and Dances with Books) are conducted from Primary 1 to Primary 6, and students at different level are assigned and guided to read selected storybooks. Students are encouraged to complete the follow up book reviews to reinforce learning.
Mother Tongue Fortnight & Cultural Awareness Camp
Mother Tongue Fortnight & Chinese Cultural Camp aims to create an immersive environment for learning and appreciating Mother Tongue Language and Culture. The students are exposed to a wide variety of activities such as finger painting, traditional top making and bamboo strips book making. We provide authentic experiences for students to learn and apply Chinese Language skills through these activities.
Integrated Project Work (IPW) and Class Presentation
Primary 5 IPW and Class Presentation for Primary 1 to Primary 4, supports development of students’ oral presentation skill and boost their confidence. During IPW, students have the opportunity to present ideas and create a multimedia video clip to showcase their group projects, whereas Primary 1 to Primary 4 students will be rotated to present their thoughts and content on a given topic.
Integrated Project Work and Values-In-Action
The IPW and VIA in Mee Toh School is multi-faceted and supports the growth of the whole child. Together, they emphasize on the school value of service, teamwork, care and resilience and remind students of their responsibilities towards the school community.
Chinese Language & Arts Integrated Curriculum
The school boasts a vast collection of calligraphic works by renowned artists. The programme aims to expose and instill an appreciation of the Chinese Culture through the appreciation of selected calligraphic works. At the end of this 5 year progressive programme, students will be guided to complete an artwork incorporating knowledge and skills learnt from Primary 1 to Primary 5.
Language Acquisition Emphasis
Development of Critical Thinking Skill is one of the main focus of language acquisition (together with writing and oral presentation skills) in the department. Different pedagogies and questioning strategies are deployed to teach thinking skills.
